Wacky Wednesday: August 26

On this final Wacky Wednesday of August, the words are wackier than usual. The first word you may not have heard before, but you might be familiar with what is describes. Kakorrhaphiophobia is a noun which refers to an abnormal, persistent, irrational fear of failure. Everyone has experienced a fear of failure, but people with this phobia can find their fear debilitating to the point of them doing nothing. Our next word is another noun. Lamprophony means loudness and clarity of enunciation. One might say something like a stage actor was praised for their lamprophony during the performance.

The holidays today have a bit of everything. For our token food holiday, today is National Cherry Popsicle Day. Who doesn’t like popsicles? It is also National Dog Day. If you were considering finding a new four-legged roommate, today is the day! Next we have two women focused celebrations today. First is National Webmistress Day celebrating women in the web development field. Second is National Women’s Equality Day which commemorates the adoption of the 19thAmendment to the United States Constitution in 1920. After a century, women are still fighting for equal rights in many areas. Show your support for Women’s Equality and be sure to appreciate any women web developers you know today.

Wacky Wednesday: August 5

It’s the first Wacky Wednesday for August and I feel this is the wackiest set of holidays so far. And our wacky words are not the kind used in everyday speech. Our first world Erinaceous is an adjective. It refers to the genius of a species of animals, specifically the hedgehog. They come from the family Erinaceidae and there are four main species of Erinaceous. Our next word is a noun. Firman refers to a Near Eastern sovereign’s edict; a grant or permit. The term dates back to the 17th Century but its origins come from Persian and Sanskrit.

As I said the holidays are extra wacky today. We have our token food celebration with National Oyster Day. We also have National Underwear Day and National Work Like a Dog Day. National Underwear Day began in 2003 and was started by the company Freshpair. National Work Like a Dog Day honors people who put in the extra work. The day was inspired by the strong work ethic of canines, especially service dogs. I think I’d prefer to celebrate service dogs today. I don’t think they get enough praise in the public eye. Now go buy some new underwear. You know you want to.

Coffee & Contemplation: Mother’s Day

This Mother’s Day, I want to give everyone something to contemplate when you all celebrate your mothers. Not everyone observes Mother’s Day. Other’s feel pain when they see everyone out and about with their mom. Some may take mom out to dinner or lunch. Or they’ll take mom shopping. Keep in mind some mothers are no longer with their families. Some have passed away and this is a difficult time for the families. Other people may have never had good relationships with their mothers. They don’t celebrate because they never felt they had a mother.

Some mothers are selfish and narcissistic. They take from their children instead of giving them love. I do not intend to push out negativity. I want everyone to understand that Mother’s Day is negative for some people. I only ask they everyone bare this in mind when running around with mom. Some never grew up with a mom. Some had a bad mother. Some were fortunate enough to have a loving mother. There’s another thing I hope people will recognize. Cat moms and dog moms and any woman who takes care of a pet, should get some praise on the day of mothers.

So, celebrate all the moms in your life. Even the unconventional ones. And show respect to those who wish not to observe the festivities. And make sure those furry friends get a card for their mom. They may need help. Most cats and dogs I’ve met don’t have jobs or money. Freeloaders.
