Throwback Thursday Poetry: The New Toy

yes, yes everybody knows
what happens to toys and where they all go
they are torn, broken, and beaten
but nobody knows what’s the real reason

perhaps they are attacked all of a sudden
but what are the odds of being attacked by somethin’
when a toy is played with far more than often
it will be attacked by those who have been forgotten

he is defiled and harmed
in oh such a frightening fashion
he is beaten to a pulp
his leg will need to be refastened

the toys are so mean
there are too many to fight
he’ll get them somehow
they will all cry in the night

the fire burned everything
the master did not come from the room
if i cannot play with him
then neither can you

Wacky Wednesday: July 8

It’s time for another Wacky Wednesday. This week is pretty chill when it comes to holidays and as always, I have a couple fun words to expand your vocabulary. Our first word of the day is Screenager. A noun referring to a person in their teens or early twenties who has an aptitude for computers and spends much of their time on the internet. There is also a 2016 documentary titled Screenagers where a mother must decide if she should give her daughter an iPhone, directed by Delany Ruston.

Our next word is Wayzgoose. A noun referring to a holiday or party for the benefit of printers, usually held in August. Most often on or around St. Bartholomew’s Day. The term initially meant a fat goose suitable for stuffing. The term was used for parties for printers because it marked the end of the Summer season and goose was often the dish of choice for that time of year. This holiday also marked the start of the season of working by candlelight.

As usual, our wacky holidays revolve around food. Today is the first annual celebration of National Freezer Pop Day. That’s right, 2020 is the first year to officially celebrate freezer pops. How do you observe the holiday? Pick up and eat some freezer pops. Easy enough. Today is also National Chocolate with Almonds Day. The origins of this holiday are unknown, but it still sounds delicious. My apologies to anyone with a nut allergy, but hopefully you can still enjoy the chocolate. Be sure to share some pictures celebrating these foods or using the new words you’ve added to your vocabulary. It’s hot outside. Get a freezer pop!

Tuesday Poetry: Clown Lives Matter

I think it started as a prank
The Clown Apocalypse of 2016
Some people having fun
But not trying to hurt anyone
Then it grew into something
Larger and more sinister
People used it to justify
Bad behavior and scaring children
Two months it lasted
From early September
To Halloween –
One week later the
Biggest clown won
The election
Was it a small thing
That grew too big
Or was it a publicity stunt
A distraction –
It was a unique phenomenon
That deserves more attention
I think there’s a lot to be said
About our culture
What drives us and what we fear
What was the socio-political climate
Leading up to the most unpredictable
Event of the 21st Century –
Someone in Tucson petitioned
To have a protest parade
Supporting this new clown movement
It was not the kind of attention
The people of Tucson wanted –
Everyone prepared for zombies
But no one knew what to do
When clowns stood on the edge
Of forests and sides of roads
Beckoning the youth to follow
