Wacky Wednesday: March 10

Well, we’ve come to the end of our exploration into old English insults. We’ve met some interesting words along the way and the final two are just as interesting. Our first word is Yaldson. This is a 15th century word meaning “the son of a prostitute.” I’m sure that was insulting and painful in the 15th century. Our next word is Zoilist. It refers to someone who is overly critical and a judgmental nitpicker. The word comes from Zoilus who was a Greek grammarian that became known as one of the most vitriolic critics of Homer, author of “The Iliad” and “The Odyssey.”

We have many holidays to celebrate today. For our token food holiday, we have National Blueberry Popover Day. Popovers are airy rolls that puff up when baked and are often filled with creams, custards, and fruits, especially blueberries. It’s also National Pack Your Lunch Day which I consider a food holiday. If you enjoy Super Mario and Nintendo games, today is National Mario Day. The most important holidays to celebrate today are National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and, every second Wednesday of March, National Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day. I’m not sure if dietitians and nutritionists would approve of blueberry popovers for lunch.

Tuesday Poetry: The Underwater City of Pearl Part 2

The Pearlites are of a peaceful nature
But against Crestations it’s a bad mixture
The war they have been fighting for centuries
How it all started is still a mystery
One thing’s definite, they are true enemies
No hint of happiness in their memories
Guerrilla Warfare, they do not understand
The Pearlites militia is far too grand
They dominate the sea like a world power
Against their mite the ocean floor will cower
Happiness Crestations seek to devour

Many years ago, our land was still young
We conquered the sea with the help of none
Now this new enemy challenges us
They dislike our views so now we must fight
All we can hope for is our own success
Fighting all those who wish to conquer light
Hoping we don’t commence our own demise
Life would not end very well for the Skies
We protect them from these demons of hate
Sent here from the heavens to guard this place
The outside world may never know of us
But to keep them safe, that is out purpose
Despite our efforts the war is not ours
The enemy’s numbers are far too large
A legend speaks of a time such as this
It says we’ll overcome the great monster
At the heels of an outsider who will
Help us in our endeavor to prevail
Sending the enemy to the dark pit
This is evil’s home where wrong-doers go

Poetry Monday: The Underwater City of Pearl Part 1

A monster will be defeated by the righteous ones
With the help of a stranger from an unknown world
Through the eyes of the Prophet these things will be done

In a distant sea, beyond the horizon
Is a magical world full of illusion
Impossible to reach by a Mariner
Only those who are true and just may enter
But the path that one seeks is filled with danger
Over a thousand years since one has ventured
For centuries this wonder was lost to all
A prophecy of recent will make the call
The new legend predicts a young man will come
To conquer the obstacles with help from some
By the words of the Prophet, shall it be done

Come here boy I have something to tell you
It’s time you learned about a secret place
Full of wonder and enchantment beyond
The likes of which you may have never seen
Yes, yes monsters and magic all around
This is a place that can never be found
How is this place so easily hidden
Well it’s under water to begin with
They say this city has never been reached
At least not in the past ten thousand years
Only one who is worthy; pure of heart
Can cross the dangers that keep it apart
What dangers are there? I don’t even know
But you can bet your tail no one will live
Through the traps that hide a place so special
This amazing place no one can fathom
Everyone has something to imagine
An amazing place where the fish can speak
They swim on up and ask you for money
Such a wonderful place to go explore
