Coffee and Contemplation: My Favorite Books of 2020

I enjoyed many of the books I read during this last year. I read more books than I have in an entire year and I’m proud of myself for that. There were two in particular that stood out to me. It wasn’t so much the stories themselves but the writing and the way the stories captured my imagination. This isn’t a book review. Not really. I hope what I say will encourage you all to read these books, though one might be hard to find. These were both new approaches to old ideas. And there was something supernatural and magical about them.

The first book is “The Wolfman” by Nicholas Pekearo. Many have said this is the best werewolf novel ever written. I’m inclined to agree. It was tragic that Pekearo died before seeing it published. The story is about a man who is a werewolf and uses this condition to hunt and kill bad people like murderers, serial killers, etc… The main character reminded me of my father in many ways. Both his good and bad qualities. Copies of this book are online. Physical copies are more expensive. I don’t think it’s being printed for the moment. If you prefer e-readers, it’s still more expensive than others. Just fair warning but it’s worth every penny.

The second book is “The Night Circus” by Erin Morgenstern. The synopsis makes one think this will be a romance novel, but the romance is subtle. I didn’t notice the two characters were starting a courtship until half-way through. This could be because of the non-linear narrative. There’s no mushy stuff. There’s too much magic going on in the story. It has a little of everything and is well written. My enthusiasm for this novel overshadowed many of the others I read in 2020. This book is a little easier to acquire than the first one I mentioned.

What were your favorite reads of 2020? I often stick with supernatural or magical realism type stories but please share any books that stuck out in your mind during 2020.

Wacky Wednesday: January 6

Welcome to the first wacky day of the new year. This one will be lots of fun. There are still several old English insults that we haven’t covered so let’s keep that trend going. Our first word is Mumblecrust. A mumblecrust is a toothless beggar and is derived from the name of a stock character in medieval theatrical farces. Our second word is Quisby. This is someone who shirks from work or lays around. In Victorian English, doing quisby meant the same thing. These insults don’t roll of the tongue like many others, but it can be fun to call someone a name and have them not know what it means.

There are several holidays today. For our token food holidays we have National Shortbread Day, this refers to the shortbread cookie of Scottish origin, and National Bean Day. Though this day is intended to celebrate the beans we usually eat; kidney, red, soy, etc…I also like to think of it as another day to celebrate the coffee bean. I do enjoy adding beans to soups as well. Today is also National Technology Day celebrating all things technology from smartphones to vehicles. And today is National Cuddle Up Day. January is the coldest month of the year and this day encourages everyone to cuddle up with loved ones for the many health benefits. Enjoy some shortbread as you cuddle with your significant other or even your pet. It’s always a good time for cuddles.

Coffee and Contemplation: Writing Updates

I wanted to take the time to give all my readers a quick update on some of my projects. In the fiction realm, since I’ve been writing some smaller pieces to post on this blog I’m behind on finishing my novel. No surprise there. I still have about 15 chapters to write but I keep getting more ideas for short stories to include on this blog. I want more content that doesn’t involve searching for holidays to talk about. It’ll happen eventually. The important thing is I’m still writing and don’t plan on quitting. I’ll find my groove at some point.

Moving on, in the poetry realm, I have two small books (or chapbooks) that are ready to go. One of them is complete and all I need to do is choose a publish date and start taking steps. The other has a Halloween theme. I want to find an artist for illustrations and publish around September or October 2021. We’ll see how things go. I haven’t written any new poetry since I completed these projects. I plan to focus more on specific themes for my collections. I think readers of poetry will find more enjoyment from smaller books with more focused ideas.

With the nonfiction posts on this blog, I hope to find other things to write about beyond quirky holidays. I plan to keep the Wacky Wednesday segment with holidays because it is a bit fun to learn about what foods are celebrated. But I want to expand the ideas I share on this blog. I haven’t put much thought into it for now, but something will spark my interest and new content will arise. Will you keep reading for that long? I hope so. As always, I’m open to suggestions. Leave a comment or shoot me a message. I’m curious to see how long I can keep this thing going.
