Coffee and Contemplation: Halloween Remembrance Day

This is a thing I made up. Instead of celebrating Valentine’s Day, I celebrate Halloween again. Both holidays involve candy so it kind of works. The idea came about a couple years ago. I knew several people who, even if they had partners, they hated Valentine’s Day and everything about it. They also all enjoyed Halloween over every other holiday. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Will it catch on and become a big thing? I don’t know. That’s not my goal. The main purpose is to give people something else to celebrate that maybe doesn’t make them feel awful for not have a romantic partner.

It’s rumored that more breakups occur on February 14th than any other day of the year with New Year’s Eve being a close second. I don’t know if there are any real statistics for this. I’ve never bothered to research. Some Latin American countries know the day as Día del Amor y la Amistad (the day of love and friendship). It’s isn’t just about lovers but showing gratitude towards friends as well. So why now show your love for your favorite holiday with your friends and celebrate Halloween Remembrance Day? Dress up or don’t. Eat candy or don’t. Have a feast with friends. Or watch horror movies with a Valentine’s theme. There are many fun, creative ways to celebrate Halloween Remembrance Day. Enjoy!

Coffee and Contemplation: A Change of Pace

I’ve made a few changes to my blog format to streamline my post scheduling and to, I hope, make things more interesting for you, my readers. By the way, if you’re a fan of mine, I will refer to you as Hellcats. Enjoy this new moniker. I’ve started the Snapshot Saturday posts to feature some of my photography. I have many photos to go through providing me with endless amounts of posts for Saturdays. I feel this is more interesting than discussing the different holidays each week. I will continue to talk about holidays on the Wacky Wednesday posts, but those will be the only posts featuring weird holidays.

Sundays will continue to feature posts like this one. The Coffee and Contemplation posts will have a more specific topic of discussion. Since the title came from the Netflix television show “Stranger Things,” it seemed appropriate to make these posts about supernatural storytelling. Starting on February 21, I will begin discussing the many books I’ve read in order to become better acquainted with the genre within which I wish to write. I’ve read many books. This is not intended to be book reviewing, but a discussion in what elements make for great supernatural storytelling.

I may expand this to include films and television. But that is a lot of content to cover and I don’t want to put too much on my plate right now. There is also poetry, music, and video games to consider in supernatural storytelling and that is way too much to tackle. This endeavor may become more problematic than I’m expecting, but I will do my best regardless. Next week’s post will be a little more fun before I get into the serious dialogue of my reading adventures. That post was already planned for February 14, so I decided to put off my main goals a little while longer. I don’t think any of you will mind. I hope you’ll join me in these escapades into the supernatural. It’ll be spooky fun.

Coffee and Contemplation: Inspire Your Heart with Art Day

This is a special day for appreciating the art that inspires us and moves us emotionally. It doesn’t matter if it’s music, painting, writing, or film, the job of the artist is to make people feel something. What are some songs, movies, art pieces, or theatre performances that have moved you to tears or laughter? What inspires your heart? If you don’t already, push yourself to go to an art gallery or theatre performance. You can view these virtually sometimes too. Read a book or write your own. Start whatever creative work you’ve been putting off. Or encourage a friend to work on their art.

Spend the day considering how art in its many different forms affects your life. Show that appreciation. If you have friends who create, show them some love. Buy their art. Write a review about their work. People don’t get famous without the help of their friends. If you don’t know anyone, share some of the works that are most meaningful to you with your friends. Share your favorite book, favorite musician, favorite film, or whatever else is your favorite thing. Share and inspire others. Leave the world with more art than you started with.
