Twofer Tuesday Poetry: Friendly Flirting & Intimacy Costs Extra

Friendly Flirting

I spent many days
Weeks even
Building the courage
To ask the question

Is all this flirting
Just for fun
Or do you hope
It will lead somewhere

Naturally
I hoped
It was building
To something

Then one day
I got a message
Meant for someone else
You were embarrassed
My chest was pounding

I got my answer
Without asking
I said I wouldn’t ask
Any of the many
Questions I had
You said thank you
And asked
How I was feeling

Were you worried
I was angry

You’ve made more effort
To keep me around
Than others have

What am I
To you

What am I
To anyone

Intimacy Costs Extra

I’ve had my fair share
Of prostitutes

They were nice to me
Because I gave them money

I thought they would help me
Feel less alone

I was always disappointed

Masturbation is more satisfying
But sometimes it’s nice
To be held

Twofer Tuesday Poetry: Cinnamon Whiskey Shanty & The Tommy Gun

Cinnamon Whiskey Shanty

I like to drink that cinnamon whiskey
Hey oh hey oh gonna’ drink all day oh
It burns my throat and makes me feel tipsy
Drinking rum and whiskey makes us feel okay oh

I sleep in the brig no bed in the forecastle
Hey oh hey oh gonna’ drink all day oh
The captain says I’m just a big hassle
Drinking rum and whiskey makes us feel okay oh

Sailors we all be sipping on our whiskey
Hey oh hey oh gonna’ drink all day oh
Life under the black ball will make you feel frisky
Drinking rum and whiskey makes us feel okay oh

The Tommy Gun

They started with the travel bans.
They slowly took our rights away.
They built and filled internment camps.
They watched as our children were killed.
Who rallied them with hate speeches?
Who brought death to many of us?
Politician turned dictator.
Ronald Teagun. The Tommy Gun.

Most of the poetry in this book I wrote within about a week. I would call it extreme inspiration or an emotional rage, but perhaps it was a little of both. I hope, in some small way, this collection will help the world. I never thought I would write poetry this much again, but I felt more passion behind this project than many of my other projects. I feel I finally found my voice when writing these poems and that voice has continued into more poetry which I hope to publish later this year.

I also sent this collection to the Pulitzer Prize committee for their award in Verse. I did/did not win. My main thought at the time, “I’m doing it to say that I did it.” Winning never crossed my mind. After sending copies of the book to the Pulitzer, I discovered a typographical error in one of the poem titles and my heart sank. I have since fixed the error and changed the cover, but my pride is still hurt.

James Pack examines masculinity and anxiety in “Men Are Garbage,” a book of poetry in which he reflects on childhood trauma and his time as a nightclub bouncer.
