Poetry Monday: Women Have Mantrums Too

We had boxes for Go-Go dancers
On the dancefloor

Some girls would climb up to dance
I told them, to avoid liability issues,
To get down

They put their hand out
For me to help them down
I walked away

They yelled at me in Spanish

They climbed on the box
On their own
They can get down on their own

I treated them the same
As I treated the men

Equality

Women have yelled at me
For opening doors
Saying they’re not weak
They can do it themselves

I hold doors for men too

I’m just being polite
And respectful

Poetry Monday: The Show Must Go On

Are you watching closely?
I have a show for you
It’s full of amazement
And laughter and trauma
One show with all the things
This show is about pain

Are you watching closely?
Is the illusion real?
Is there a show on stage
If there’s no audience?
Where is everyone?
Don’t they see my exploits?

Are you watching closely?
I say to nothing
Did you have a great time?
Silence from the empty
Do you notice me here?
Are you watching closely?

Poetry Monday: Daddy Issues

I was four
The first time
I saw
My father
Get drunk
And beat my mother

This happened
For many years
And I repressed
Most of my
Memories

He went on
To beat my sisters
Years later
Always drowning
Himself in alcohol
Never feeling
Remorse

Repressed memories
Returned
I saw him
As he truly was

I’m supposed
To be a man
Like that?

This is the man
I once wanted
To be?

What kind of man
Am I
For wanting
That?

I don’t want to be
A man anymore
