Seeking Beta Readers

I have finished writing my first novella. There are eighteen chapters, and this can make it a little difficult to catch all the plot holes and discrepancies. I am looking for Beta Readers. I would prefer people who do not work in the writing profession but anyone who wishes to read my unpublished work are welcome. I’m only looking for general feedback; good, bad, or indifferent. Not everyone likes the stories I write and I’m not asking you to praise me. I’m looking for honest feedback. I have more information on my Beta Readers Page.

I have also created a Beta Readers Facebook Group as a place for everyone to share their feedback in one place for me to see. For now, this is a public group, and anyone can join, but I am only looking for a few people. 5 to 10 people feels like enough. I am still trying to figure out if I can send documents through the group. Currently, I only have my novella ready to be read. I have a few short stories but a couple of them have been accepted for publication so I’m not sending those out for feedback.

Once I have critiques from several people, I will make changes if needed and continue sending the manuscript out for publication. It is very likely; however, that I will self-publish this work and focus on writing and submitting longer novels. Novels I have yet to write but am in the process of outlining the first one. It’s a little exciting. I hope to finish the outline in time to participate in the National Novel Writing Month this November. In any case, I’ll need Beta Readers for these future works as well and I can definitely send you all free copies of books if you choose to Beta Read for me.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Story Submission Struggles

I have spent many years studying and learning about the publishing world.  I believe this has gone on for somewhere around ten to fifteen years.  I’ve studied the self-publishing process and the traditional publishing process. Self-publishing is easy, but you have to put in all the work for marketing and selling your book. Traditional publishing is difficult to get into, but once you’re in, you’re good to go.  In attempting to get something published in the traditional fashion, I have learned what writing mistakes I use to make, and I’ve been correcting them.  Writing is a skill that one must develop over time.  Nothing happens overnight.

I have sent many stories and poems in for consideration to many online magazines, and a few that still print magazines.  And with the continued rejection, I persevere.  I want to make something clear.  I am not angry about these rejections and hold no animosity towards these magazines.  Sadly, I will never know what caused the rejection.  I assume it’s because my writing isn’t up to par, but for all I know, they may not have liked the subject matter or the story overall. Unfortunately, I don’t have anyone in the publishing world who can critique my work.

Every one of these rejection letters sounds the same.  “Thank you for the opportunity to read your work, but we will not be considering it for publication.”  Or something like that.  They always say thank you for the submission and ask you to submit again.  Part of me wonders if they have to reject new authors X number of times before they will publish something.  It doesn’t matter because it causes me to continue growing and improving as a writer.  Eventually, I’ll write something they want to publish.

I now want to share a list of the many stories I’ve written and the publishers that rejected them. This is not a dig on the publishers. I want other writers to see who I’ve submitted to and maybe they’ll feel less discouraged after receiving a rejection letter.  Rejection is part of writing and I’m proud to have these rejections.  The purpose of this post is to help other writers.  I also want to note, I am not including word count or any guidelines to these submissions.  Look it up on your own if you’re interested.  I’m including the progress on unfinished short stories as well just for fun.

This is not a list of all the short story publishers out there and it is a little different from the novel publishing world.  I found these online magazines from the lists on the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and the Horror Writers Association.  These are basically writing unions and one day when I actually have money, I will pay and signup to become a member of these associations.  Perhaps that will help me improve my writing.  I am including link to all these other magazines, so you may submit to them if you wish.  And no matter how many rejections you get, never stop writing.  Never give up; never surrender.

Embracing New Challenges

For the last few weeks I’ve been grappling with the woes of unemployment.  This is the first time in my life that I have ever had to apply for unemployment and it’s both painful and humbling.  On the plus side, this newly available free time has helped me finish some writing and do more of the blogging and things.  I’ve even been more active on social media.  With more finished writing, I’ve also been submitting to online magazines.  Some have rejected me and others I’m still awaiting a reply.  It’s been a rocky few weeks.

With publishing and things, I have several short stories that will likely be rejected soon.  I say likely rejected because I feel I need to be rejected 10,000 times before someone will publish my work.  We shall see.  Also, June 16, will be a free eBook download day for Dollar Tales from the Morbid Museum: The Ghosts Inside.  Download on your kindle or kindle app for free the entire day.  On June 30, I have a new eBook coming to your kindle and kindle app titled Dollar Tales from the Morbid Museum: Flash Fiction.  This one will include four short stories and a little introduction to the Morbid Museum.

As far as promotion is concerned, I have recently started a Patreon page.  This is a social platform to help artists, creators, and the like to gain financial assistance for the creative endeavors.  Since I am unemployed, I thought this would be a good idea.  I at least would like $7 a month to help cover the cost of this website.  I have also been working harder on increasing my reach on my Facebook and Twitter pages. I have increased likes and followers, but this is only the beginning.  Please tell your friends and keep an ear out for other free eBook download days.

The challenges will never cease, and I will continue my mental health battle.  I’ve been finding more and more reasons to stay positive and finally feel like I have a support system.  This is a first for me, but this is what motivates me to keep writing, to keep searching for a new job, and to continue promoting myself to one day become a full-time writer.  What a joy that would be to work for myself and still make enough money to survive and have fun.  We should all be so lucky.  Remember to face your challenges and never give up!
