Coffee and Contemplation: Tie One on for Safety

November 16 through December 31 is designated as the Tie One on for Safety Holiday Campaign organized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). It started in 1983 to convince people have a designated driver when drinking. The idea is the sober driver wears a red ribbon, so everyone knows they are the driver. Hence the phrase tie one on meaning a ribbon. The number of traffic-related deaths caused by drunk drivers increases during the holiday season. This is why the campaign last for about 6 weeks. Since the creation of new taxi services such as Lyft and Uber, it should be easier than ever to avoid driving after a night of drinking.

What folks don’t want to talk about this year is the increase in Covid-19 cases as we approach Winter. This means you shouldn’t travel for the holidays. Also, you should do all your drinking at home to social distance. If we can tie one on for safety, then we should be able to stay home for safety. There are many who still believe Covid-19 is a hoax. Whether you do or don’t, the flu is real, bronchitis is real, strep throat is real. Wear a face mask to help protect you from those illnesses during the Winter. Mask up for safety should be a thing too.

Coffee and Contemplation: Adopt a Senior Pet Month

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month. This is important because many people only want puppies or kittens from shelters. A lot of the older animals don’t get a forever home. Many shelters will waive fees for senior pet adoptions or for pets that have been at the shelter for too long. Senior pets are less likely to play and run around like crazy and that’s why I love adopting senior pets. I don’t want to deal with the rambunctious tiny ones. I want crabby old ladies who lay there and judge everyone.

I want to tell everyone about my cat, Callie. According to the shelter adoption papers she is about 12 years old. I think she’s much older than that, but in either case she’s a senior kitty. She likes sleeping, eating food, and yelling at me to refill her water dish. She doesn’t do much else. She’ll lay on my lap and sleep while I watch TV or read a book. She’s a perfect companion for me. So, if you have a lifestyle that’s a little more chill and quieter, try adopting a senior pet. And make sure you get them the right food for their age. I’m not sure about dogs, but senior cats can’t eat as much wet cat food as younger cats. Just FYI.

Coffee and Contemplation: National Author’s Day

As an indie author, it’s difficult to get the word out about my works. The best way to promote something is with money and most indie authors don’t have much to spare. One review can make or break our confidence because we get such little feedback. National Author’s Day was founded to celebrate authors for their hard work and contributions to literature. The publishing game has changed a lot since this holiday’s inception. It’s now easier than ever to have something published. However, it’s also more difficult to find financial success. It’s not easy scribin’ and vibin’.

If you know an indie author who’s struggling to fulfill their passions and dreams, write them a note or message saying how much you appreciate them and their work. Everyone needs a little encouragement, but writers need a little more to keep going. Writing can be a lonely endeavor. Sometimes it feels as though no one sees or cares about the things you create. So, prove them wrong and tell them what you think of their writing. Encourage them to keep writing and to never give up. It will mean the world to them. Believe me. Celebrate the authors you love and the one who inspire you as well. All authors deserve a little support.
